Am 05.Oktober ist UNESCO Lehrertag - international auch World Teacher's Day bezeichnet. Seit 1994 würdigt die UNESCO mit diesem Tag die Arbeit von Lehrern, inzwischen in mehr als 100 Ländern.
In Deutschland gibt es aktuell etwa 790.000 Lehrerinnen und Lehrer, der größte Teil von ihnen (64 Prozent) sind Frauen.
Das Datum geht zurück auf das Jahr 1966:
Auch wenn mir die Vergabe von Gedenktagen durch die UNESCO etwas inflationär vorkommt - Lehrer erfüllen im Bildungssystem eine äußerst wichtige Funktion und gleichzeitig haben sie sicher keinen einfachen Job. Immer mehr Ansprüche werden an Lehrer herangetragen, sie sollen Gesellschaft und Elternhaus "ergänzen".
"On 5 October 1966, the world's teachers made a giant step forward. A Special Intergovernmental Conference adopted the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which, for the first time ever, gave teachers throughout the world an instrument that defines their responsibilities and asserts their rights. In adopting this Recommendation, governments unanimously recognized the importance for every society of having competent, qualified and motivated teachers." (Quelle: Education International)
